CANYON CITY, Ore. – The Grant County District Attorney’s Office has issued a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for Gary Dylan Cavan, a 42-year-old person of interest in a homicide investigation. He is considered armed and dangerous and the public is advised not to approach him. Cavan was last seen in Baker City, Oregon and is wanted in connection with a homicide in Grant County, Oregon.

Here are the key details about Cavan:

  • Date of birth: March 17, 1982
  • Height: 6’2″
  • Weight: 215 pounds
  • Hair: Blonde
  • Eyes: Blue

The investigation began on February 28th when the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for a welfare check from the victim’s family at a residence in John Day. Later, a deceased female was found at the John Day Motel and it was determined that the suspect and the female were known to each other and associated with the same address.

The suspect in this homicide investigation is believed to have been an inmate at Snake River Correctional Institution who attacked a corrections officer, leading to State v. Cavan. In the case, authorities proposed holding Cavan’s trial in a courtroom constructed in the visiting area at SRCI, citing his extensive disciplinary record and the risk he posed to safety if transported to Vale for trial.

On appeal, the defendant argued that holding his trial at SRCI violated his right to a public trial, an impartial jury, and due process.

The Oregon State Police, Grant County Sheriff’s Office and Grant County District Attorney’s Office are cooperating in the investigation. Anyone with information about Cavan’s location or whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Zac Downing of the Oregon State Police at (541) 519-3634.
